Press Release

NEW YORK – Susan Rothenberg: First Horse, an exhibition of seven paintings and six works on paper, will be on view at Craig F. Starr Gallery from January 31 through March 29, 2014. A catalogue of the exhibition, which includes an essay by Michael Auping, will be available.

Susan Rothenberg made her first painting of a horse in 1974, laying the groundwork for what would become her signature image. First Horse, featured in this exhibition, initiated Rothenberg's exploration of the horse as a surrogate - for humans, and for herself. For Rothenberg, the horse was a way to explore figural imagery while preserving some of the common rhythms of 1970s abstraction.

This exhibition showcases the relationship between the human and animal figure and the transition from stillness to motion. Highlights include large-scale horse paintings Split (1974) and August (1976), as well as the rarely exhibited Mary III (1974) - one of three paintings based on Polaroids Rothenberg took of her friend, the actress and writer Mary Woronov.

Susan Rothenberg was born in Buffalo, New York in 1945 and received a BFA from Cornell University. She has had solo exhibitions at museums across the globe, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Tate Gallery, London. This is her second exhibition at Craig F. Starr Gallery.
