Press Release

NEW YORK – Craig F. Starr Gallery is pleased to present Robert Morris: Drawings 1961-76, on view from September 9 through October 23, 2011.

This exhibition brings together sixteen drawings by Robert Morris (b. 1931), all executed between 1961 and 1976. The selection of works offers a rare glimpse of the fascinating, and impressively diverse, ways in which Morris uses the simplest and most straightforward of materials––ink and graphite on paper––to achieve an aesthetically varied and conceptually rich body of work.

Although Morris has produced thousands of drawings over the course of his long and prolific career, they have garnered relatively little attention. For scholars, collectors, students, and curators alike, this exhibition opens the door to a treasure trove––one of the last unexplored domains within an otherwise thoroughly mined period of the modernist era: the 1960s and 70s.

Robert Morris: Drawings 1961-1976 is made possible by the generous contributions of Robert Morris and Antonio Homen. The fully-illustrated catalogue includes an essay by Joachim Pissarro, professor, curator and author of Johns/Rauschenberg: Comparative Studies on Intersubjectivity in Modern Art and Art Outside the Art World.
