NEW YORK – Craig F. Starr Gallery is pleased to announce Amselm Kiefer: Drawings from the Sonnabend Collection. The show, which runs from February 18-April 2, 2011, is comprised of over thirty works, and is the second collaborative exhibition between Craig F. Starr Gallery and the Estate of Ileana Sonnabend.
The works in this show were acquired by Sonnabend in 1980, after visiting Kiefer’s studio with her son, Antonio Homem. Months earlier, they had been profoundly impressed by his contribution to the Venice Biennale. Their enthusiasm for Kiefer marked the beginnings of their interest in the new German art that was, in 1980, on the threshold of international exposure.
Kiefer’s expressions of historical doubt are not propositions of an alternative, but acknowledgments of a human plight. The episodes, myths, and images in these works do not come into focus as clear narratives. They emerge and recede, blended together in a powerful allegory of history as material.
Anselm Kiefer: Drawings from the Sonnabend Collection is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by James Lawrence, critic and historian of postwar and contemporary art.
